Who Are The Boys...?

We are a cover band that plays mostly 80’s rock music for tips outside of sports events in Phoenix, AZ. We have also played for the Phoenix Heart Walk and at little league baseball games, and have raised over $1000 for hurricane relief, the Phoenix Rescue Mission and families in need.

We are a family band composed of Bubar brothers Joe IV, Will, and Ben, and our father, Joe III. We play on street corners during Diamondbacks games, Suns games, and most anywhere we can get in front of a good audience. We made our first dollar playing at our first Diamondbacks game August 11, 2017, but the idea behind it all occurred in Puerto Vallarta Mexico, when our parents saw two brothers on the beach playing “Hotel California” for tips on just a keyboard and a melodica.

We started out with just a Yamaha melodica, acoustic violin, and keyboard, but have expanded as a band since then, adding live percussion as well as tracks, and upgrading to a ‘keytar’ and an electric violin. Our first song we ever learned as a band was “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, and, even after adding over a dozen more songs to our repertoire, it is still our biggest hit. One thing we have learned is that melodicas are rather fragile instruments that don’t last very long. We just bought our 6th melodica and always carry an extra with us for backup!

But more importantly, we have found that everywhere we go, people tend to be kind, give generously, and are not rude to us. This was a most pleasant surprise because by other indications it seems that our country is coming apart at the seams. But that has not been our experience at all as we play classic tunes from ‘yesteryear’ and interact with people of all shapes and sizes and stripes and colors. Our fans are rich, poor, black, white, young, old and everything in between and beyond. We are very grateful to our kind and generous friends and neighbors all over Phoenix and especially the great fans of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ben

The youngest player in the group is 11 and plays the melodica and keytar. He likes fishing and hunting, football and baseball (both playing and watching), and is very good at math. He’s going to be in 6th grade at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy this fall. And he really enjoys the busking experience with Boys on the Beat.

Willy

Willy is 14 and plays keyboards and percussion with the band. He loves to play drums for the youth group at Scottsdale Bible Church and his favorite sport is baseball. This year he will be a freshman at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy.

Joe IV

Joey, the oldest of the three brothers in the band, plays the electric violin. While he enjoys playing rock music on street corners with his family for tips, he has also had seven years of classical violin lessons, and has been learning to play bass guitar in his free time. He also plays tennis, and greatly enjoys hunting and fishing. He is fifteen and going into his sophomore year at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy.

Joe III

Our Dad is a proud graduate of Wheaton College outside of Chicago (and a Cubs fan), and has a Masters degree in Theory & Composition from Arizona State University and arranges all of our songs for us. He is the Director of Instrumental Music at Scottsdale Bible Church where he has worked for over 25 years!
